College care package party for Moms

If your college freshman just left the nest and you’re feeling all the feelings, you are so not alone. This season hits hard. They’re off chasing independence (and laundry), and we’re home wondering how they’re doing, if they’re eating, and how we can still show up for them from miles away.

Now is the perfect time to organize a College Care Package Party with other moms going through the same thing. It’s a fun, easy get-together where everyone brings one item in bulk to swap and build care packages together. We laugh, we snack, we share stories… and we all leave with a box full of love to send to our homesick kids.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Pick a Date

Choose a date about 3–4 weeks into the semester – just when the newness wears off and the homesickness tends to creep in. A weeknight or Sunday afternoon works well. Keep it casual: kitchen table, back porch, wherever you can fit a few moms and some snacks. Our Moms group arranged a room at the high school to meet.

Step 2: Send the Invite

You can make an invitation in Canva, and send to a group text or Facebook invite. Be sure to include:

  • The date, time, and location

  • What to bring (see the next step!)

  • A reminder to RSVP by a certain date, so we can plan

Sample invite text:

“Let’s put together some care packages for our college kids! Bring [X number] of one fun or useful item (think snacks, sticky notes, UNO cards, etc.) and a dessert to share. We’ll swap, snack, and build boxes of love to mail to our homesick freshmen. RSVP by [date] so we know how many to shop for!”

Step 3: Ask for a Firm RSVP

This part’s important! Once you know how many moms are coming, everyone buys that number of the same item. So if 20 moms RSVP, each person brings 20 of their item. (That way, everyone leaves with one of everything.)

This also gives everyone time to order in bulk. I love grabbing things from Amazon – whatever I think will make my kid smile. (And yes, I’m adding affiliate links here if you want to make shopping even easier!)

Step 4: What to Bring

  • One item in bulk (same number as the RSVP count)
  • Dessert to share
  • A small shipping box to take your goodies home
  • A note or card for your student (optional but sweet!)

Some favorite care package fillers:

You can even include a seasonal treat or small gift card. The goal is to remind them that home is cheering them on.

Step 5: Party Time!

Set everything out buffet-style so everyone can build their own box. While you’re swapping items, enjoy the desserts, catch up, and swap a few stories. You’ll leave feeling lighter. And you are ready to pop that care package in the mail!
