Work-from-Home Small Business Owners: Home Office Finds

Working from home as a freelancer or solo entrepreneur has its perks – but it also means you’re responsible for creating a workspace that supports your creativity, focus, and comfort. Over the years, I’ve learned that a few well-chosen tools can make a big difference my productivity.

Whether you’re a graphic designer like me or running another small business from your home, here are my top recommendations to make your home office more efficient and enjoyable.

A Lightweight Laptop for Flexibility

If you’re always on the move – or just like the option to work from a coffee shop now and then – a reliable laptop is a must. I use a desktop iMac for heavy design work, but I also recommend a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro for anyone who wants power and portability. It’s perfect for handling design programs, spreadsheets, client calls, and more.

An iPad and Apple Pencil for On-the-Go Creativity

Whether I’m sketching logo concepts or reviewing web layouts with a client, my iPad and Apple Pencil are always within reach. If your work involves drawing, illustrating, note-taking, or client presentations, this combo is a game-changer.

Pair it with this keyboard case, and you’ve got a powerful mini-office in your bag. This has been my favorite purchase. My latest hobby involves using Adobe Fresco watercolor brushes to paint baby chickens. I have not found a use for these…yet.

A Stylish Laptop Tote or Backpack

Head out to the coffee shop or client meeting with a good laptop bag. I love a tote that’s sleek enough for client meetings but roomy enough for my iPad, sketchbook, and cords. There are also some great backpack options (my college son uses this one) if you travel or are a student.

A Standing Desk to Switch Up Your Workflow

Sitting all day can kill your energy—not to mention your back. I highly recommend a standing desk or adjustable desk riser. It’s an investment that pays off in better posture and productivity. Amazon has a range of options from minimalist to full electric standing desks, depending on your space and budget.

A Dyson Fan to Stay Cool and Focused

Summer heat and creative focus do not mix. I keep a Dyson bladeless fan in my workspace to stay cool without the noise or bulk of a traditional fan. It’s sleek, efficient, and keeps me cool and productive.

Zig Pens and a Quality Sketchpad

Even in a digital world, I still sketch ideas on paper. My go-to supplies are Zig pens and a sturdy sketchpad. There’s something about putting pen to paper that unlocks creativity and makes brainstorming feel more tactile and real.

Noise-Canceling AirPods for Focus Time

When you’re working from home, distractions are everywhere. Noise-canceling AirPods help you zone in on your work and block out background noise – especially helpful during Zoom calls or deep focus sessions. I rely on my AirPods daily.

My husband bought them as a gift. I’m not much of a jewelry person, but we call them my “earrings”. They are a splurge, but so useful! I love that I can wear them on walks and listen to podcasts – but switch to a phone call when I need to.
